Well here we go again. Now I would like to talk about badminton, my favorite game for the past 4 years. Lucky stars shines on me as I am lucky to be selected as reserve player for our school team. My dream comes to reality. Khoo Soo Han, a gifted player is also been selected as reserve player as well. He is my doubles partner most of the time.
Our school will be playing in the national level badminton competition soon. Therefore our team members are feeling nervous now because we will face tough opponents. Even tough I am only a reserve player, I can feel the pressure and anxiety.
It is not easy to get where we are now. Hwa Chong’s C division badminton team secured third placing in West Zone Badminton Championship. Our school had to play with quite a number of strong opponents.
First, we played round robin method in the preliminary round. We won all the matches. We played against Bukit Batok High School, Newtown High School and Hillgrove High School. Bukit Batik High School won second placing, followed by Newtown High School and Hillgrove High School.
During quarter – final stage, our opponent was Boon Lay High School. We lost the game with 3 -2 score. That was expected because we did not really put much effort in this match as our team secured a place in semi-final earlier.
In the semi-final, we played against Kranji High School. Actually, if based on standard of our team, we should be able to beat them but the fact was we lost the game. The outcome was unexpected. We thought we were able to win in the matches of second and third singles and the first doubles. But surprisingly our first doubles did not play to our expectation and they lost their match.
We were very sad and disappointed. We should not have lost to Kranji High School. Due to the lost, we were third in the West Zone Badminton Competition. As third placing team, we will have a tougher journey in the national level competition.
As our school team practice, only Secondary Two players are selected as first team players. I hope I will have the chance to play next year. Even though as reserve player, I did learn a lot from watching all the games that our school team went through. I learned from the defeat as well as learned how to cope with pressure during the match by watching my seniors in action. This is the main intention of our coach requesting us to accompany our seniors for all the matches. It gives us the chance to experience the competitive atmosphere and pressure so that we can cope with it when we play next year. I will put more effort during training and try to improve my skills as well. I sincerely hope that I will be one of the players in the future.
